Moses Basket

The Sweetwaters community in South Africa is badly affected by HIV/AIDS. 40% of the community are HIV positive and over 2,000 children live in homes without parents.

There are now 99 orphaned babies living with relatives in the community. However some mothers dying of AIDS have no one left to leave their baby with.

This photo shows the Moses Basket in the Sweetwaters community.

Here mothers can leave their babies with the comfort of knowing they will be taken care of. The basket has blankets for the mother to wrap her baby in and a monitor that rings to let the nurses know when a baby has been left.

For these dying mothers who have no hope, the Moses Basket gives them the comfort of knowing their baby will be cared for and loved.
